PESHAWAR: Mokha, one of the traditional and ancient games is still popular and played in NWFP, particularly in Yousafzai belt regularly during autumn season. The game is being played in Mardan, Swabi and Buner districts, and its annual tournament is arranged wherein about 10 teams take part in the competition. With the passage of time and popularity of other sports, Mokha is on the decline, however, the Yousafzai tribesmen are still taking interest to keep it alive. Each team, taking part in the tournament, consists of 10 players and all players have their own bows and arrows. An eight feet high wall that is called ‘Bout’ is erected in open ground and on the top of the wall or Bout a ring called ‘Karha’ is installed, which has about three inch diameter white spot or target. The players have to target the white spot and score points. Team captain is called Sarchi and vice captain is known as Naray. An umpire who is the sole authority to decide the game monitors the proceeding. The game is usually of 100 to 150 points and the team scoring more hitting the target is declared the winner. Every shot hitting the target gets two points. Interestingly, if captain of the team fails to hit the target the rival team gets double points. The game is started with captain’s targeting the Bout turn by turn while in case of any captain’s missing the target twice vice captain follows his mate and if he too fails to hit then an ordinary player of the team is given the opportunity. However, the defeated team starts the game on the next day as usually the game is played for five to six days. Last day of the game is considered crucial and audience or spectators take keen interest in the fight and encourage their respective teams by clapping, dancing along drum beating and passing remarks with loud voice in order to subdue the opponents. Though, Mokha lovers are doing their level best to give new life to the dying sport, the government should patronise and encourage this game, which perhaps is the most ancient sport surviving till date.
